Eleven Months of Pearls
Matching the thirty-nine pearls of an Aria strand took our buyers through four harvests and two hemispheres.
A pearl cannot be cut to match. It arrives from the oyster finished, and either it belongs with its neighbours or it does not. Matching a graduated strand means finding thirty-nine individuals with identical warmth, lustre and orient — from harvests that may be oceans apart.
Our buyers grade under north light only, against an ivory card, never white. White paper lies about warmth. Between harvests the candidate pearls wait in silk, in the dark, because light slowly teaches a pearl bad habits.
The final strand is knotted on doubled silk in a single sitting, by one pair of hands. Eleven months of patience, four hours of thread.
